Police to Destroy Unexploded Explosive Devices in Yobe

The Yobe State Police Command has announced plans to carry out a controlled demolition of a high-velocity explosive device discovered in Damaturu.

The operation, scheduled for 1:00pm on Wednesday, will be handled by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the demolition will take place at a secure location away from the Command headquarters on Gashua Road.

“Members of the public are advised not to panic, as the operation is safe and poses no threat to residents,” he said.

According to Abdulkarim, the explosive device was found near Potiskum Road, and is suspected to have been abandoned by metal scrap dealers. He noted that the discovery highlights growing concerns over the handling of suspicious metal objects, particularly in areas affected by conflict.

The police spokesman referenced the tragic June 22 explosion in Kano, where an explosive device mistakenly taken to a scrap yard detonated, killing 15 people.

“We urge scrap dealers, especially those operating in conflict-prone areas, to exercise extreme caution and avoid collecting unfamiliar or unusual metal items,” Abdulkarim added. “Suspicious objects should be promptly reported to the nearest police station or security post for proper investigation.”

He further warned that anyone found collecting, purchasing, or selling explosive materials would be arrested and prosecuted for endangering lives and property.

The Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, has reiterated the Command’s commitment to public safety and urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperative as security agencies work to prevent similar incidents.
