China Backs Nigeria’s Anti-Cybercrime War, Cautions Citizens Against Internet Fraud

The Chinese government has declared its full support for Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat telecommunications and cyber fraud, including cases involving Chinese nationals. At the same time, it has issued a stern warning to its citizens in Nigeria to steer clear of any illegal activity that could land them in trouble with Nigerian authorities.

This position was outlined in a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday and made available to newsmen.

“Over the past year, Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies have intensified their crackdown on telecommunications fraud, leading to the arrest of numerous suspects, including some Chinese nationals,” the statement read.

“Telecommunications and online fraud are issues of global concern, and tackling such transnational crimes presents a common challenge to governments worldwide.”

The Chinese government reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on cybercrime, noting that it enforces strict codes of conduct for its citizens abroad and has enacted targeted legislation to combat digital fraud. One such effort is the Anti-Telecommunications and Online Fraud Law passed in 2022, which underscores China’s commitment to curbing such offenses.

The embassy further emphasized that Chinese nationals overseas are legally bound to comply with local laws and avoid involvement in any illicit activity.

While pledging to protect the legitimate rights of its citizens abroad, the Chinese government called on host nations, including Nigeria, to ensure the safety and legal protections of Chinese nationals living within their borders.

“The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria supports Nigeria’s actions to combat telecommunications and online fraud,” the statement affirmed. “In line with the consensus reached between the leaders of both countries, China is ready to deepen law enforcement cooperation with Nigeria.”

The embassy highlighted plans for joint operations targeting online scams, gambling, and other cross-border crimes, aimed at promoting a safer and more secure digital environment.

Such collaboration, the embassy noted, will not only protect the legitimate interests of Chinese citizens in Nigeria but also strengthen the growing China-Nigeria Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
