Military Warns Vigilantes Against Unauthorized Operations in Plateau, Confirms 8 Deaths in Kanam Ambush

The military task force Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) has cautioned vigilante groups in Plateau State against embarking on unauthorized missions, following the death of eight local vigilantes in a deadly ambush by armed bandits in Odare Forest, Kanam Local Government Area.

In a statement issued Wednesday from its headquarters in Jos, OPSH clarified that contrary to widespread reports, eight vigilantes were killed—not 70—during the ill-fated operation. Several others remain missing.

According to the statement, the vigilantes, who had mobilized from Kanam LGA, failed to inform or seek approval from OPSH before launching the mission. The group reportedly made a stopover in Kukawa community for what was described as “administrative arrangements,” during which they allegedly clashed with locals, looted shops, and confiscated over 20 motorcycles under unclear circumstances.

“While advancing towards Odare Forest, the vigilantes were ambushed by armed bandits, resulting in the death of eight members. Others remain unaccounted for,” the statement read.

In response to the incident, troops from OPSH Sector 2, stationed in Wase, have commenced search and rescue operations aimed at locating the missing individuals.

The military emphasized that while it appreciates the dedication of community-based security outfits, all local security operations must be carried out in coordination with OPSH and other recognized security agencies.

“Unauthorized missions not only expose vigilantes to grave danger but also jeopardize the safety of innocent civilians and disrupt the synergy required for effective counter-terrorism efforts,” OPSH warned.

The task force reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and stability across Plateau State and urged residents to assist ongoing security operations by providing credible intelligence and promptly reporting suspicious activities.
