Presidency Debunks Misleading Reports on VP Shettima’s Remarks at Book Launch

The Office of the Vice President has dismissed as misleading and mischievous recent reports circulating online that allegedly link Vice President Kashim Shettima’s remarks at a public event to political developments in Rivers State.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 10, 2025, the Vice President’s media office expressed concern over what it described as a gross distortion of his comments during the launch of the book “OPL 245: The Inside Story of the $1.3 Billion Oil Block”, authored by former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), held at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

According to the statement, some online media platforms and individuals twisted the Vice President’s account of a historical episode, in which the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan allegedly considered removing him—then Governor of Borno State—during the peak of the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.

The Vice President’s Office clarified that his remarks were reflective and drawn from personal experience, and should not be misinterpreted or linked to recent political developments in Rivers State, including the declaration of a state of emergency or the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—actions which, notably, have not occurred.

“This sensational reporting, which strips the Vice President’s remarks of their proper context, ventures into fiction,” the statement read, adding that there was no reference or implied comparison between Shettima’s experience and the situation in Rivers State.

The Office of the Vice President urged the media to uphold responsible journalism and verify facts before rushing to publish potentially inflammatory narratives.
