Translate Training into Action, COAS Tasks  Army Commanders

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has urged Commanding Officers and their equivalents at the tactical level to convert the insights gained from military workshops into practical leadership on the field, stressing the critical need for decisive action and operational excellence.

He gave the charge on Thursday, at the closing ceremony of the Second Commanding Officers Workshop held at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Rukuba, Jos.

Lt Gen Oluyede noted that the effective discharge of responsibilities by unit commanders is essential to achieving the strategic objectives of the Nigerian Army across the various theatres of operation.

Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele

Acting Director Army Public Relations, in a statement on Thursday said COAS  emphasised that the workshop was not merely an academic exercise, but a platform to sharpen leadership capabilities and reinforce operational strategies.

“The value of such engagements lies in our ability to translate knowledge into action,” he said. “Commanders must lead with conviction, plan with precision, and operate with courage. What we learn here must reflect in the discipline, performance, and motivation of our troops.”

The Army Chief highlighted the importance of professional leadership, moral character, and a strong sense of duty. He also charged the commanders to pay close attention to the welfare of their subordinates, stressing that a motivated and well-supported force is central to mission success.

“Your troops will mirror your leadership,” Lt Gen Oluyede remarked. “Set the tone with your conduct, be deliberate in your mentorship, and never compromise on discipline or ethics. The Nigerian Army must remain a bastion of professionalism in these challenging times.”

He reiterated the Army’s resolve to uphold its constitutional responsibilities, while remaining people-focused, accountable, and operationally ready.

The week-long workshop gathered mid-level commanders from formations and units across the country, offering sessions on tactical leadership, joint operations, civil-military relations, welfare planning, and counter-insurgency strategies. The training forms part of the Nigerian Army’s continuous professional development drive.

The closing event was attended by senior officers from Army Headquarters, instructors from the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), and invited guests from other sister services and security agencies.
