“With a heavy heart, I received the news this afternoon of the passing of my colleague, comrade, and fellow patriot, General Muhammadu Buhari,” Obasanjo said. “As a soldier, he played his role. As an administrator, he fulfilled his duties. And as a statesman, he stood tall in service to the nation.”
Obasanjo noted that Buhari’s death comes at a time when Nigeria most needs the wisdom and experience of its past leaders to navigate the prevailing national challenges.
“His demise comes at a time like this when we need the totality of experience—and what I may call the statesmanship—of all those who have led this country to help steer us out of the current crisis,” he added.
“He will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
