FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday in Honour of Late Ex-President Buhari

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It forms part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by the President in tribute to the late elder statesman.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the Minister described Buhari as a leader who served the nation with “dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to unity and progress.”

“The holiday is a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring legacy in governance and national development,” the statement read in part.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the day to reflect on the former President’s leadership and the values he stood for, while promoting peace, patriotism, and unity in line with Buhari’s vision for a prosperous Nigeria.

The late President died in the United Kingdom and his death was confirmed in a statement issued by his former media aide, Garba Shehu.

As part of the national mourning, flags are to be flown at half-mast from Sunday, July 13, through Saturday, July 19, 2025. The Federal Government also extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians.

Buhari, who served as military Head of State between 1983 and 1985, returned to power as a democratically elected President in 2015 and led the country until 2023. He was widely known for his tough stance on corruption and efforts to strengthen national security.

His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday in Katsina, with the Northwest Governors Forum also declaring the same day as a public holiday across all states in the region in his honour.
