Northwest Governors Mourn Buhari, Declare Tuesday Public Holiday
The Northwest Governors Forum (NWGF) has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday across all Northwest states in Nigeria in honour of the late former President, General Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in the United Kingdom on Sunday.
The announcement was made through a solemn press statement signed by Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, the Chairman of the Northwest Governors’ Forum and Executive Governor of Katsina State. The Forum expressed profound shock and sorrow at the demise of the elder statesman, describing him as “our father, our leader, and the pride of the Northwest region.”
“Late former President Buhari lived a life of service, integrity, and sacrifice for the betterment of Nigeria,” Governor Radda noted. “His passing is an irreparable loss not only to the Northwest region but to the entire country.”
The Forum extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the immediate family of the deceased, the people of Katsina State—Buhari’s home state—and all Nigerians who mourn the national icon.

In tribute to the former President’s enduring legacy, the NWGF unanimously agreed to declare a public holiday on Tuesday, July 15th. According to the Forum, the holiday is a mark of honour and respect for Buhari, who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria and humanity.
As part of the final rites, Governor Radda announced that the remains of President Buhari will arrive in Katsina on Tuesday by approximately 12:00 PM, with the burial ceremony scheduled to hold at 2:00 PM.
“We call on all Nigerians to join us in prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the statement urged.
Governor Radda prayed for Allah (SWT) to grant the late President Aljanah Firdaus and grant his family, friends, and all Nigerians the strength to bear the national loss.
General Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State between 1984 and 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, was widely respected for his discipline, patriotism, and commitment to anti-corruption.
His death marks the end of an era for a man considered a symbol of uprightness and national unity, especially among the people of Northern Nigeria.
