Buhari’s Patriotism Will Never Be Forgotten — Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defence has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing him as a symbol of patriotism, discipline, and unwavering national service whose legacy will forever be remembered.

In a condolence message signed by the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, CON, the Ministry said Buhari’s contributions to national development—as both a military leader and democratically elected president—cemented his place as one of Nigeria’s most enduring statesmen.

“Former President Buhari served with distinction in the Nigerian Military, ultimately rising to the esteemed rank of General and Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985. Following his military tenure, he was elected as Nigeria’s President, serving from 2015 to 2023,” the statement read.

Dr. Matawalle noted that Buhari’s leadership, marked by integrity and discipline, inspired generations of Nigerians and military officers alike. “His legacy of honour, integrity, patriotism, and unwavering national service will forever be etched in the annals of our nation’s history,” he added.

He described the late President as a man who embodied the ideals of unity and selfless service, noting that Buhari’s belief in a strong, indivisible Nigeria continued to inspire hope even in challenging times.

The Defence Ministry extended its condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Buhari family, the government, and the people of Nigeria, praying for Allah to grant the late leader eternal rest.

“May Allah grant his soul Aljanatul Firdaus,” the Minister concluded.

President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on Sunday in a clinic in London, United Kingdom.
