Lagos Police Arrest Suspected Armed Robber, Recover AK-49 Rifle

In a major breakthrough against violent crime, operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a high-powered AK-49 assault rifle alongside a cache of ammunition during a raid in Ikorodu.

The suspect, identified as Omotayo Iwajomo, was apprehended by detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in a coordinated, intelligence-led operation targeting a known criminal hideout in the Ajegunle axis of Ikorodu.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the raid was carried out on July 15, 2025, and led to the recovery of an AK-49 rifle, three magazines, fifteen rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, three rounds of 9mm K2 ammunition, and two rounds of 7.62x51mm ammunition.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect has been actively involved in armed robbery and land-grabbing operations across various parts of Lagos State,” Hundeyin said. “The recovered firearm was allegedly used to facilitate these crimes.”

The police further disclosed that Iwajomo is part of a larger criminal syndicate, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend his accomplices. Authorities assured that all individuals linked to the case will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law once investigations are concluded.

Commending the swift and professional conduct of the SCID detectives, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven and proactive policing strategies.

“Let this serve as a clear warning to all criminal elements that Lagos remains a hostile environment for unlawful activities. We will not relent in our mission to ensure the safety and security of all residents,” CP Jimoh stated.

The arrest marks another significant step in the Lagos Police Command’s ongoing crackdown on organized crime and illegal arms proliferation across the state.
