Tinubu Receives Buhari’s Remains in Katsina Ahead of Burial in Daura
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday received the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, ahead of final funeral rites scheduled to hold in Daura, Katsina State.
Former President Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital. He was 82.
President Tinubu, who arrived in Katsina from Abuja at exactly 1:42 p.m., was received with a guard of honour. Moments later, at 1:51 p.m., a Nigerian Air Force plane conveying the late president’s remains touched down.
The late president’s casket, draped in the Nigerian national flag, was received at the foot of the aircraft by President Tinubu; Vice President Kashim Shettima; Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló; Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine; former Niger President Issoufou Mahamadou; and former Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Also present were Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and other members of the late president’s family.

A solemn military ceremony ensued as a joint team of pallbearers, made up of nine senior officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, wheeled the casket in a slow march to the tune of the hymn, “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.” The procession passed through a full military guard of honour involving six officers and 96 soldiers.
The pallbearer team included Major-General Mohammed Usman, Major-General Oluwafemi Williams, Major-General Shuaibu Nudu, Rear Admiral Suleiman Dahun, Rear Admiral Jonathan Ajodo, Rear Admiral Samuel Ngatuwa, Air Vice Marshal Adeniyi Herbert Amesinlola, Air Vice Marshal Idi Sanni, and Air Vice Marshal Obinna Obiabaka, under the coordination of Major General Mike Alechenu.
President Tinubu and other dignitaries walked behind the casket in a solemn procession before it was placed into a waiting military hearse. The body was then transported to Daura, Buhari’s hometown, for the Janazah (funeral prayers) and burial ceremony.
A 21-gun salute rang out in honour of the late former president, marking the state funeral with full military honours.
