JUST IN: Tinubu Renames UNIMAID After Muhammadu Buhari
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri in Borno State after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made on Thursday during an expanded session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in honour of the late statesman who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82.
“Before we take the prayers in honour of his memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded), can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” President Tinubu said at the conclusion of the session.
Earlier, Tinubu paid a glowing tribute to Buhari, describing him as “a good man, a decent man, an honourable man” whose legacy of discipline, patriotism, and integrity would resonate across generations.
“President Buhari was not a perfect man—no leader is—but he was, in every sense, a good and honourable man. His legacy will be debated, as all legacies are, but the moral force he represented, the incorruptibility he maintained, and the example he set will not be forgotten,” Tinubu stated.
Reflecting on Buhari’s years in both military and civilian leadership, Tinubu praised the former president’s humility and stoicism, noting that he consistently resisted the temptations of power.

“He stood ramrod straight—unmoved by applause, unseduced by power, and unafraid of the loneliness that often comes with doing what is right, rather than what is popular. His courage was quiet, his patriotism lived more through action than words,” he added.
President Tinubu also recalled their political alliance, which led to the historic 2015 general elections that ushered in Nigeria’s first peaceful transfer of power from one ruling party to another.
“We stood together, he and I—alongside other patriots from across Nigeria—to form an alliance that enabled our nation to achieve its first true democratic transition of power. When he became President, he governed with dignity and restraint, bearing the burdens of leadership with humility.”
The President also commended Buhari’s modest post-presidency lifestyle, noting that upon leaving office, he returned quietly to Daura without attempting to control national affairs from behind the scenes.
“When his tenure ended, he went back home—not to pull strings, but to live quietly as he always had, never seeking to impose his will. Even in death, he left this world with serenity—no complaints, just submission to the will of God. Such was the man Nigeria now mourns.”
Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Inter-Ministerial Committee and Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda for organizing a befitting state funeral within 48 hours, describing it as a “profound honour” to lead Buhari’s burial procession in Daura.
Concluding his tribute, Tinubu offered a heartfelt prayer:
“Mai Gaskiya, the People’s General, the Farmer President, your duty is done. May Almighty Allah forgive your shortcomings and grant you Aljannah Firdaus. May your life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness. President Buhari, thank you. Nigeria will remember you.”
