Buhari’s Family Lauds Presidency, Citizens, Others for Nationwide, Global Support

The family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu, and Nigerians at large for their overwhelming show of support during the period of mourning and burial rites.

In a statement signed by former presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu on behalf of the family, Malam Mamman Daura, the most senior member of the Buhari family, said the kind gestures and presence of national and international dignitaries have provided the family with comfort and strength in the face of their painful loss.

“It is truly comforting to receive such support from President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited both the United Kingdom and Daura to commiserate with us. These gestures have instilled in us the courage to bear the loss,” Daura said.

The family particularly thanked President Tinubu for declaring a public holiday in Buhari’s honor and renaming the University of Maiduguri after the late president — describing the actions as thoughtful and memorable tributes.

They also acknowledged world leaders who offered condolences through personal visits, representatives, letters, or telephone calls. Notable among them were King Charles III of England, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, the African Union Chairperson, and ECOWAS leaders. Former Nigerian Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar was also commended for his solidarity.

The family further extended appreciation to governors from several states, particularly Katsina State Governor Dr. Dikko Umar Radda and Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, as well as delegations from Adamawa, Kano, Kwara, Lagos, Kaduna, Imo, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kebbi states. Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi was also acknowledged for his condolence visit.

Vice President Shettima and his wife, along with former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar, Namadi Sambo, Yemi Osinbajo, and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe were specially mentioned for their support. Also appreciated were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajuddeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and other members of the National and State Assemblies.

The statement further acknowledged the efforts of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, his predecessor Boss Mustapha, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and former Chief of Staff Professor Ibrahim Gambari, as well as past and present cabinet members who were actively involved in the burial arrangements.

Traditional leaders who played key roles were also lauded, including the Sultan of Sokoto, the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of Gwandu, and the host Emirs of Katsina and Daura, among others from across Nigeria and neighboring countries.

The family noted with appreciation the massive turnout of religious and community leaders, political figures across party lines, youth and women groups, and civil society actors who thronged Daura to pay their respects.

Business moguls including Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, Kola Adesina, and Nasiru Danu were also acknowledged for their condolence visits.

“We are grateful to all Nigerians and foreign missions who joined us to mourn and honor Muhammadu Buhari. Your prayers, visits, and heartfelt condolences have been a great source of solace,” the statement concluded.

The family requested continued prayers for the repose of the soul of the former president and thanked all who stood by them in their time of grief.
