VON Apologizes for Erroneous WAFCON Report, Cites Possible Security Breach, Identifies Culprit

The Voice of Nigeria (VON) has formally apologized for publishing a false report that prematurely announced Nigeria’s defeat to Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final. The misleading article, which appeared on the broadcaster’s website on the night of Saturday, July 26, contradicted the eventual outcome—a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory by the Super Falcons that secured their record-extending 10th continental title.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Director General/CEO of VON, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, described the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and thanked Nigerians and friends of the organization for their outpouring of concern, criticism, and support. He reaffirmed the broadcaster’s alignment with the national celebration of the Super Falcons’ historic triumph.

“Voice of Nigeria aligns with this historic moment, as our Super Falcons mounted a courageous comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3–2, securing a record-extending tenth WAFCON title and affirming their place at the pinnacle of African women’s football,” Ndace stated.

Credible sources informed PRNigeria that the individual responsible for publishing the erroneous story has been identified and is under internal investigation for possible disciplinary action.

However, the DG stressed that no single staff member— including the sports reporter initially linked to the article—would be scapegoated, as the incident reflects broader institutional weaknesses.

“We are not placing sole responsibility on any individual,” Ndace said. “This episode underscores the urgent need for comprehensive safeguards and a more resilient editorial system.”

While preliminary reviews point to an internal editorial lapse, Ndace disclosed that the organization is also probing the possibility of external interference. “We are investigating the likelihood of a security breach or identity theft through hacking. As a public institution, we cannot rule out cyber threats, and we are taking necessary steps to strengthen the security of our digital platforms.”

In response to the incident, VON has unveiled a series of internal reforms aimed at restoring public confidence and improving editorial accuracy. These include the creation of a dedicated Investigative Desk, a Fact-Checking Unit, and a Monitoring and Evaluation Team. In addition, strategic staff redeployments have been initiated to enhance accountability and efficiency.

“These reforms are part of a broader effort to reposition VON as a more responsive, transparent, and globally respected media institution,” Ndace explained. “We remain committed to the core pillars of our mandate: People, Platform, and Partnership.”

The DG concluded by reaffirming VON’s commitment to journalistic integrity and public service, describing accountability as the bedrock of its operations. “Your voices remind us that accountability is not a burden—it is a cornerstone of public service. We thank Nigerians for standing with us not just in moments of celebration, but also in times of reflection and reform.”
