Police Nab Woman Linked to Murder of Pregnant Nurse, Mutilation in Anambra
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, in connection with the brutal murder and dismemberment of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The arrest, which was made on July 25, 2025, followed support from residents of Umueri village and the larger Ogbunike community, according to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
During interrogation, Nwafor confessed to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, identified as Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who is currently on the run. The suspect revealed that Elobisi had called her to clean up bloodstains after committing the crime and admitted knowledge of how they sold human body parts to local native doctors.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the nurse, a trained health worker, had been lured to the suspect’s residence under the pretense of providing medical assistance. Her mutilated body was later discovered dumped in a soakaway pit in the community.

Further revelations from the arrested suspect led operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to raid the shrine of a native doctor, Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile, located in Itima Amawa village, Ogbunike, in the early hours of July 29. There, police recovered suspected human parts concealed in cellophane bags.
The command has since launched a full-scale manhunt for Elobisi and other suspected collaborators and buyers of human parts.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the act as “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life.” He urged members of the public with useful information to come forward, assuring that informants’ identities would be protected.
“This is a deeply disturbing incident that highlights the urgency of community-police collaboration,” CP Orutugu said. “We will ensure that justice is served.”
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to bringing all those involved in the crime to justice and called on traditional and religious leaders to continue supporting efforts to rid the state of such atrocities.
