Army Denies Allegations of Misconduct in Imo Community

The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has denied recent allegations linking its personnel to acts of misconduct in the Umualumaku community, located in Ehime-Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

In a statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the Division described the claims that soldiers burnt homes, looted property, and harassed civilians as “false and calculated attempts to sabotage the Division’s efforts.”

“The populace is kindly advised to note that no soldier under the Command was involved in such misconduct,” the statement read. “Our troops operate under strict adherence to the code of conduct in military operations and rules of engagement, ensuring best practices at all times.”

The Division believes the allegations may have been orchestrated by criminal elements seeking to discredit the Army’s presence and erode public trust. “Their objective is to sow seeds of discord and undermine efforts aimed at maintaining peace and security,” the statement added.

The military assured residents that it remains a professional and disciplined force, committed to upholding Nigeria’s Constitution and protecting law-abiding citizens. It also reiterated its continued collaboration with other security agencies, community leaders, and civil society organisations to apprehend those responsible for violent or unlawful acts in the region.

The Division urged media practitioners to verify information before publication, warning that misinformation and disinformation are frequently used by criminal actors to disrupt peace-building efforts.

The Nigerian Army’s 82 Division operates across the southeast and parts of the south-south geopolitical zones, playing a key role in internal security and counter-insurgency operations.
