Northern Leaders Urge Action on Almajiri Crisis, Equitable Resources at Arewa Summit in Kaduna
Leaders from Northern Nigeria used a high-level summit in Kaduna this week to deliver a clear message to the federal government: the persistent crisis of out-of-school children and the need for equitable resource distribution are critical issues that must be addressed to ensure national unity. While acknowledging the Tinubu administration’s progress on security and infrastructure, participants at the two-day event emphasized that these core regional concerns remain a top priority.

The communique, issued at the conclusion of the “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Unity” session, highlighted the problem of the Almajiri system and out-of-school children as a “key concern of Northern Nigeria.” The event, hosted by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF), brought together a powerful delegation of government officials, security chiefs, and regional stakeholders to deliberate on electoral promises and national development.
Government Praised, but Challenges Remain
The summit, which concluded on July 30th at Arewa House, saw President Bola Ahmed Tinubu represented by Governors’ Forum Chairman, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, and Vice President Kashim Shettima represented by Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar. Despite the high-level government presence, the conversation repeatedly turned to the challenges facing the North.
Key resolutions from the summit included a strong call for “substantial investment in education to address the out-of-school children crisis, especially in the North.” This was paired with a demand for “equitable resource distribution” to tackle regional imbalances, a move participants praised the administration for beginning to address with increased allocations to sub-national authorities.
