Akwa Ibom Boosts National Security with Land Donation for Nigerian Air Force Base

In a move set to strengthen Nigeria’s strategic defence infrastructure, the Akwa Ibom State Government has donated land for the development of a Forward Operational Base (FOB) by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

The base, to be constructed within the South-South region, is expected to enhance air power deployment and bolster maritime security across the Gulf of Guinea corridor.

During a visit to the state on 31 July 2025, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, commended Governor Pastor Umo Bassey Eno for his proactive commitment to national security. He described the donation as a “pivotal” contribution that would accelerate operational readiness and promote economic growth through civil commerce and tourism.

“The FOB will assure safety and security, positioning Akwa Ibom as an attractive destination for investment and tourism,” said Air Marshal Abubakar.

The Air Chief underscored the value of sustained collaboration between the NAF and the state government, noting that such partnerships are essential for building a secure and prosperous Nigeria. He also reaffirmed the NAF’s dedication to protecting citizens and intensifying its presence in the region to counter transnational threats.

Governor Eno, in response, emphasized that a safe society is the foundation for development and pledged continuous support for the Air Force. “Security is a shared responsibility, and we are proud to partner with the NAF in securing our future,” he stated.

Air Marshal Abubakar’s visit included a courtesy stop at the palace of His Royal Majesty, Obong Edidem Charles D. Abia, FCA—Paramount Ruler of Eket—where the vital role of traditional institutions in supporting defence efforts was praised. The monarch expressed his unwavering commitment to peace and development alongside security forces.

The visit marks a defining moment in NAF’s expanding presence in Akwa Ibom and reinforces a growing synergy between federal defence institutions and regional governance.
