ABU Alumni Mourn Professor Okello Oculi, Pledge to Preserve His Pan-African Legacy
The International Studies Alumni Association of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has paid tribute to the late Professor Okello Oculi, a revered Pan-Africanist scholar, vowing to immortalize his legacy through memorials and continued advocacy of his ideals.
In a condolence visit to the family residence in Abuja’s Apo district on Sunday, a three-member delegation led by the Association’s National President, Ambassador Muntari Kaita, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the distinguished academic. The delegation included Ambassador Enoch Duchi, National Vice President, and Alhaji Suleiman Halliru, a member of the Board of Trustees.
“The members of our Association, who are mostly his students, are deeply grieved by the loss of Professor Okello,” Kaita said, describing the late scholar’s influence on the Department of Political Science and International Studies at ABU and the broader African academic landscape.

Kaita praised Professor Okello’s lifelong commitment to Pan-Africanism, international cooperation, and youth empowerment. He highlighted Okello’s role in promoting the African Union mock summit and mentoring generations of students in alignment with his vision for a united and progressive Africa.
“Okello’s passion for promoting Pan-Africanism and his willingness to share his knowledge and experiences made him a valuable asset to the global academic community,” Kaita added.
The Association announced plans to honour Professor Okello through tributes and a memorial event that will celebrate his contributions to academia and African intellectual thought.
In response, Professor Okello’s widow, Mrs. Debra Ogazuma, thanked the delegation for their visit and urged the Association to continue championing her late husband’s ideals, especially in nurturing young African intellectuals.

Professor Okello Oculi was widely respected for his literary works and teachings that advanced Pan-African discourse and inspired generations of scholars across the continent.
