Tinubu Departs Abuja for Japan, Brazil Thursday
President Bola Tinubu will on Thursday, August 14, depart Abuja for a two-nation tour of Japan and Brazil, with a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
A statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President’s first port of call will be Japan, where he is scheduled to attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama from August 20 to 22.
Themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, TICAD9 will focus on Africa’s economic transformation, private investment, innovation, and institutional reforms, as well as promoting a resilient and sustainable African society built on human security, peace, and stability.

During his stay in Japan, Tinubu will participate in plenary sessions, engage in bilateral talks, and meet with chief executives of Japanese companies investing in Nigeria. TICAD, a triennial event initiated in 1993 by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, alternates between Africa and Japan. The last edition was held in Tunisia in 2022.
Following the conference, the Nigerian leader will proceed to Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, for a two-day state visit from August 24 to 25, at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In Brazil, Tinubu will hold bilateral discussions with his host and participate in a business forum aimed at deepening economic ties. His delegation—comprising key ministers and senior officials—will explore new avenues for cooperation and sign agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Brazilian government.
