NITDA Applauds Tech Giants for Advancing Online Safety in Nigeria

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their continued compliance with Nigeria’s Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries, following the submission of their 2024 compliance reports.

Jointly issued by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the Code of Practice sets out clear guidelines for promoting online safety and curbing harmful digital content. The latest compliance reports reveal significant strides made by the platforms in protecting Nigerian users and fostering a safer digital environment.

Key Highlights from the 2024 Compliance Reports:

– 754,629 registered user complaints

– 58,909,112 pieces of harmful content removed

– 420,439 content items reuploaded after successful user appeals

– 13,597,057 accounts closed or deactivated

These figures underscore the platforms’ proactive efforts to align with both the Code of Practice and their internal community standards. NITDA noted that the submission of these reports reflects a growing commitment to transparency, accountability, and user protection in Nigeria’s digital space.

Strengthening Digital Trust

The Code of Practice mandates that major service platforms operating in Nigeria must register locally, comply with national laws, and fulfill tax obligations. Beyond regulatory compliance, the Code emphasizes the importance of safeguarding users from online harm and misinformation.

“NITDA recognizes the commendable progress made by these platforms,” the agency stated. “However, building a truly safe and inclusive digital ecosystem requires ongoing collaboration among government bodies, industry leaders, civil society, and the public.”

A Call for Continued Partnership

Looking ahead, NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to enhance digital literacy, strengthen safety protocols, and promote trust across Nigeria’s rapidly evolving tech landscape.

As Nigeria deepens its digital transformation journey, the 2024 compliance milestone serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure that the internet remains a secure and empowering space for all.
