Counter-Terrorism: MNJTF, OPHK Commanders Assess Lake Chad Operations

The Force Commander of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Major General Godwin Mutkut, and the Theatre Commander of Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, made a joint operational visit to Sector 3 of OPHK in Baga, Borno State.

This is disclosed in a statement by the Spokesperson of OPHK,Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba.

The visit was aimed at assessing ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the Lake Chad waterways and ensuring the effective use of military equipment and resources deployed in the region.

During their visit, the commanders received detailed briefings from Brigadier General Emmanuel Agada, Commander of the 403 Amphibious Brigade, and Commodore Peter Yilme, Commander of Naval Base Lake Chad. The briefings focused on measures being taken to secure the waterways, protect local economic activities, and prevent terrorist groups from operating freely.

Major General Mutkut highlighted the importance of a unified approach, noting that the stability of the Lake Chad Basin is in the collective interest of all member nations. He urged commanders to maintain close monitoring of troop performance, effective coordination, and sustained vigilance.

In his remarks, Major General Abubakar praised the troops’ efforts and called on commanders to maintain maximum alertness and a professional, aggressive posture against terrorist threats. He emphasized the critical role of providing security for farming and fishing, which are vital to the livelihoods of communities in the region.

”Troops must demonstrate the highest level of commitment in protecting the waterways to enhance farming and fishing, which remain critical to the survival of local communities,” Major General Abubakar stated.

The joint visit concluded with a tour of operational facilities and a group photograph. Senior staff officers from both the MNJTF and OPHK headquarters, as well as the Commander of Sector 3 OPHK, Brigadier General Suleiman Tilawan, also attended.
