Nigeria’s Military Gains a Springboard for Development, Tinubu Tells TICAD Summit
President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday declared that Nigeria’s recent military victories against terrorists are laying the foundation for national development, urging global partners to back Africa with fair trade and sustainable investment.
Speaking at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, Japan, Tinubu said the armed forces had “degraded terrorist networks and restored stability in conflict zones,” stressing that security gains must now translate into jobs, growth, and stronger institutions.
“These are not just battlefield victories,” Tinubu told world leaders. “They are springboards for peace, stability and development.”

Japan used the summit to announce a $5.5 billion package with the African Development Bank to boost Africa’s growth initiatives. Tinubu welcomed the pledge but warned that the continent needs genuine partnerships, not “handouts.”
“Africa requires cooperation that strengthens institutions, promotes inclusivity, and secures prosperity for its young people,” he said, while also pushing for reforms at the United Nations Security Council to give Africa a stronger voice.
On the sidelines, Tinubu met Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to deepen ties in trade, technology and defence.
PRNigeria reports that TICAD, co-hosted by Japan, the UN, AU and World Bank, has served for three decades as a platform to align Africa’s peace and development priorities with global partners.
