FG Flags Off Restoration of Voice of Nigeria’s 250KW Superpower Transmitter

The Federal Government has officially flagged off the restoration of the Voice of Nigeria’s (VON) 250KW shortwave superpower transmitter, a project described as a milestone in reviving the nation’s external broadcasting capacity.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the VON Transmitting Station in Lugbe, Abuja, on Tuesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris said the initiative represents “a significant moment in the history of the Voice of Nigeria,” as it aims to restore the largest and most powerful transmitting station on the African continent with modern, digitally compatible technology.

The Minister commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as his vision and commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s broadcasting infrastructure. According to him, the project will not only reposition VON as a respected global broadcaster but also strengthen Nigeria’s voice in the international media space.

“Upon completion of this project, the fully reactivated VON transmitters will transform the landscape of terrestrial broadcasting and position VON as a respected brand in global radio broadcasting for good,” the Minister said.

He urged the contractor handling the restoration to deliver the project within the agreed timeline and to ensure the highest standards of quality.

He further charged the VON technical team to demonstrate diligence in supervising the execution and to adopt a culture of effective maintenance to guarantee the project’s sustainability.

Highlighting the broadcaster’s role in Nigeria’s public diplomacy, the Minister expressed optimism that VON would continue to uphold its mandate as a pro-Nigeria and pan-African station dedicated to projecting positive stories about Nigeria and the African continent.

PRNigeria reports that the event formally marked the commencement of work on the restoration of the 250KW superpower transmitter, a project stakeholders say will reestablish VON as one of the continent’s leading external broadcasting platforms.
