FG to Spend N750bn on Pension Bond, Expands Free Medical Services for Civil Servants

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of Nigerian civil servants with the release of N750 billion for pension liabilities and the expansion of free medical services across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Patience Oyekunle, made this known in Abuja at the Permanent Secretary’s Quarterly Forum with Union Leaders in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

She said the Federal Government had taken bold steps to strengthen the welfare of workers through the recent allocation of N750 billion to offset accrued pension bond liabilities, a move he described as historic and long overdue.

According to her, the initiative is expected to bring relief to thousands of retirees who have waited for years to access their entitlements.

On staff welfare, Mrs. Oyekunle highlighted the renewal of the Group Life Insurance Policy for all government employees, noting that the scheme now provides broader coverage and prompt payment of benefits to families of deceased workers.

She further announced the scaling up of free annual medical screening for civil servants, with at least 5,000 employees already benefiting from the scheme in Abuja.

She added that the plan is to extend the programme nationwide, ensuring that every civil servant has access to basic healthcare.

The Permanent Secretary also stressed that the government remains committed to regular dialogue with labour unions to maintain industrial peace and harmony.

She urged union leaders to continue to support the ongoing reform agenda of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2025 (FCSSIP25), which prioritises staff welfare as a cornerstone.
