Army Arrests Soldier for Arms Trafficking in Borno, Rescues Kidnap Victims in Nationwide Operations

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of one of its personnel for alleged involvement in gunrunning, even as troops carried out successful operations that led to the rescue of kidnap victims and recovery of arms across different parts of the country.

A reliable source at Army Headquarters told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that the soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Saifullahi Garba (14NA/72/15972), was apprehended in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State with 711 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition in his possession.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had been diverting ammunition recovered during clearance operations, allegedly intending to supply them to terrorists. He has since been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.

In related operations, troops in Bama, Borno State, intercepted a terrorists’ logistics movement and recovered 379 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Ambush missions in Borno and Yobe also yielded the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, 11 rounds of ammunition, and other items, with one terrorist neutralised in the process.

The source further disclosed that in the North-Central region, troops rescued three kidnap victims in Nasarawa, in addition to five earlier freed, and recovered 579 rustled cattle and two AK-47 rifles from armed herdsmen in Taraba State.

In the South-South, operatives of Operation Delta Safe arrested 10 armed suspects in Rivers State who were disguised in OSPAC uniforms. Troops seized five pump-action rifles, locally made guns, charms, mobile phones, and ₦1.7 million cash. A separate raid in Ahoada East also neutralised two notorious cult leaders.

“These operations highlight the army’s determination to deny terrorists and criminals the freedom of action, while also dealing decisively with any internal betrayal within its ranks,” the source said.
