Yakubu Gowon University UniAbuja Promotes 104 Academic Staff to Professiorial Rank
Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, has promoted a record 104 academic staff to professorial ranks, a landmark achievement and the highest number in the university’s history. The promotions were approved by the university’s 11th Governing Council, led by Distinguished Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso.

The promotions were approved during the 78th Extraordinary Meeting of the Council, held on September 9 and 10, 2025. Of the 104 staff promoted, 58 were elevated to the rank of Professor and 46 to Associate Professor. The promoted staff represent a diverse range of disciplines, including engineering, health sciences, humanities, and various sciences.
Acknowledging Excellence and Commitment
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Mathew Adamu praised the promoted staff for their dedication to scholarship and the advancement of knowledge. “This promotion is a recognition of your hard work, academic excellence, and commitment to the values and growth of the university,” he said. He added that the record-breaking number of promotions reflects a commitment to rewarding excellence and strengthening the university’s human resources.
