Kano Separated Conjoined Twins Return Home After Successful Surgery in S/Arabia

The separated Nigerian conjoined twins, Hassana and Husaina, have returned to the country after undergoing a landmark surgical operation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The twins, who were successfully separated at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, arrived at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport to a rousing reception by family members, well-wishers, and officials.

The delicate operation was carried out under the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia.

Hassana and Husaina had been flown to Riyadh in October 2023, where they underwent extensive medical evaluations. Doctors discovered that the sisters were joined at the lower abdomen, pelvis, and spine, sharing vital structures that made their case particularly complex.

After months of preparation, a multi-disciplinary team of 38 consultants and specialists in pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology, anaesthesia, and plastic surgery carried out the separation in nine stages. The procedure lasted about 14 hours, requiring precise coordination and reconstruction of their house individual systems.

The Consular General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Kano, Khalil Ahmed Al-Admawi, who welcomed the family at the airport, hailed the success of the operation as proof of the Kingdom’s commitment to humanitarian service. He stressed that Saudi Arabia, through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, would continue to extend goodwill and medical assistance to Nigeria and other countries in need.

The successful separation of Hassana and Husaina marks the 65th achievement of the Saudi Siamese Twins Separation Program. Since its establishment 35 years ago, the program has evaluated 150 cases and conducted surgeries on conjoined twins from 25 countries, cementing its global reputation as one of the foremost medical humanitarian initiatives.

The safe return of the Nigerian twins not only underscores the strength of bilateral ties between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia but also reflects a remarkable triumph of medical science and international cooperation
