The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man who was parading himself as the “Obi of Lagos” and has since uncovered a fraudulent scheme to swindle the public of over ₦1.5 billion.
The suspect, identified as Chibuike Azubike, 65, was apprehended ahead of a planned event on Saturday, September 13, where he intended to unveil a prototype of what he called a “₦1.5 Billion Palace of the Obi of Lagos State.”
According to the police, the investigation has revealed that the ceremony was a ploy to fraudulently solicit money from unsuspecting members of the public and prominent individuals.
A False Identity and a Solo Act
Further police findings revealed that Azubike, who also styled himself as an “engineer,” confessed that he has no such qualifications. He admitted that his claim to the title of engineer was based on his work as a supplier of construction materials.
The police also stated that their investigation confirmed that Azubike acted alone and without any legitimate chieftaincy backing or recognition.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, strongly urged the public to disregard Azubike’s claims and other misleading publications. He reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting citizens from all forms of criminal deception.
The investigation is ongoing, and all suspects involved will be arraigned in court upon its conclusion. The statement was signed by DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi, the Acting Police Spokesperson for the Lagos Command.
