Resident Doctors Commences Indefinite Strike in FCT

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike after a seven-day warning strike failed to yield positive results.

In a communiqué jointly signed by its President, Dr. George Ebong, and General Secretary, Dr. Agbor Affiong, the association said the decision followed the government’s persistent failure to address long-standing grievances affecting healthcare delivery across FCT hospitals.

The doctors cited severe manpower shortages, poor welfare conditions, unpaid entitlements, unexplained salary deductions, and the overwhelming psychological toll of prolonged working hours as reasons for the action. They also decried the absence of new recruitment into FCT hospitals since 2011, describing it as a major contributor to the growing strain on the few available medical staff.

“The situation in FCT hospitals has reached a breaking point. Without new hands since 2011, the pressure on existing doctors has become unbearable. Coupled with welfare challenges, unpaid entitlements, and unexplained salary deductions, it is no longer sustainable,” the communiqué stated.

According to the association, the strike is intended to push for urgent government interventions that will restore efficiency, improve working conditions, and safeguard healthcare service delivery within the territory.

The industrial action comes just a week after the ARD concluded a seven-day warning strike, which ended without resolution of their demands.
