Lagos Police Foil Riot, Looting at Popular Market, Arrest 18 Suspects

The Lagos State Police Command has restored peace to Tejuosho Market Phase II in Surulere after hoodlums staged a violent disturbance on Thursday, September 18, 2025, under the guise of protesting a power outage.

According to police authorities, the miscreants, who mobilized around 2:30 p.m., launched attacks on traders, damaged goods and properties, and attempted to invade a commercial bank within the market. Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel guarding the bank were reportedly attacked but successfully repelled the hoodlums, preventing further destruction.

The rioters also made attempts to storm the Market Police Post but were restrained. A distress call to the Lagos Command prompted the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, to deploy additional officers, including conventional policemen and tactical squads, to quell the unrest.

Eighteen suspects were arrested in the act, while police operatives dispersed the crowd and restored order. The suspects are currently in custody and under investigation, with authorities vowing to apprehend more individuals linked to the violence.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bababeyi B. Oluseyi, the Command assured residents, traders, and business owners that normalcy has returned to Tejuosho Market and urged the public to go about their daily activities without fear.

CP Jimoh condemned the attack on police personnel and the destruction of property, warning that such acts will not be tolerated. He further advised residents to respect law enforcement officers in the discharge of their duties and to channel grievances through lawful means.

The Command also encouraged members of the public to report complaints to the nearest police station or through its emergency helplines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, and 08039344870.
