Lagos CP Warns Officers Against Extortion, Rights Violations

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has cautioned officers against unprofessional conduct, warning that extortion, harassment, human rights violations, and name-calling will no longer be tolerated in the Command.

Jimoh gave the warning during a strategic lecture with Deputy Commissioners of Police, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Heads of Departments, and Tactical Commanders in Lagos. The meeting was convened to reinforce the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on professional policing.

He reminded officers of their duty to protect the rights and dignity of citizens, stressing that crime prevention must be carried out with “a human face.” According to him, no Nigerian should be subjected to unnecessary hardship in the course of police operations.

The Commissioner particularly frowned at the practice of stopping and searching youths’ mobile phones on the road, describing it as unlawful and unprofessional. He clarified that such checks can only be conducted during legitimate investigations within police stations, and only when the phones in question are confirmed as exhibits in an ongoing case.

“Officers must desist from subjecting youths to needless harassment under the guise of phone checks. This practice is prohibited and will not be condoned,” he warned.

Highlighting the Command’s achievements for the month, Jimoh announced the arrest of several notorious suspects, including:

Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as Shameleon, arrested in connection with two violent crimes.

Jude Onouha, alleged leader of a vehicle vandalism syndicate, who disguised as a security officer to gain entry into estates.

John Samuel, an ex-convict and alleged hired assassin, arrested for armed robbery and attempted murder while trying to dispossess a victim of gold jewelry worth millions of naira.

The CP said the arrests underscored the Command’s resolve to rid Lagos of criminal elements and safeguard lives and property. He urged residents to continue supporting the police with credible information to help sustain the fight against crime.
