Military Arrests 16 Officers Over Indiscipline, Breach of Service Rules
The Armed Forces of Nigeria have arrested 16 officers over alleged acts of indiscipline and violations of service regulations.
The arrests, announced in a statement on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, followed routine military checks and investigations.
According to the Defence spokesperson, preliminary findings linked the officers’ conduct to frustrations over repeated failures in promotion examinations and concerns about stalled career progression.
“Some of the apprehended officers were already facing investigations for various offences and were either on trial or awaiting court proceedings,” Gusau said.
He explained that their actions were considered inconsistent with the standards and discipline required in the military.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that a routine military exercise has resulted in the arrest of sixteen officers over issues of indiscipline and breach of service regulations. Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues.
Some of the apprehended officers had been under jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial. Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service.
Upon completion of investigations, indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces.”
Brigadier General Gusau stressed that the move was purely disciplinary, part of ongoing efforts to strengthen order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks.
He added that the Armed Forces would not condone behaviour capable of undermining its integrity or constitutional mandate.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities under democratic authority and will continue to operate with professionalism at all times,” the statement concluded.
