Customs Moves Against Vehicle Smuggling, Launches Verification System

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched a new digital platform designed to curb vehicle smuggling and improve transparency in the verification of imported vehicles.

The platform, known as the Customs Verification Management System (CVMS), was officially unveiled on Monday at the NCS Headquarters in Abuja.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, described the launch as a major step in the Service’s modernization and reform agenda.

He said the new platform redefines how vehicle verification is conducted across the Customs ecosystem and the country at large.

“The launch of this system is another score on the board for our bold transformation agenda,” he said.

“For years, verification of imported vehicles relied on fragmented and outdated methods that left room for misinformation, fraud, and revenue leakages.”

Adeniyi explained that the new digital system was developed in partnership with the Trade Modernization Project (TMP) and indigenous technical experts.

He said the CVMS introduces a simple and secure process for verifying the duty payment status of imported vehicles.

According to him, the system is a decisive step toward eliminating the deceptive practices of individuals who have exploited loopholes in the old process.

“This new solution empowers the public and strengthens the integrity of our Service by promoting transparency, accountability, and trust,” he stated.

The Customs boss said the platform provides a centralized and digital system where vehicle records can be traced, verified, and confirmed within minutes.

He noted that the development will enhance the efficiency of enforcement units and other relevant arms of the Service.

Adeniyi added that the new system will also allow the public to make informed decisions about vehicle purchases and reduce the circulation of smuggled or improperly cleared vehicles.

“In essence, this system brings openness to an area that was previously shrouded in uncertainty and manipulation,” he said.

He explained that the CVMS will make Customs operations smarter, faster, and more transparent by digitizing and standardizing vehicle verification across all commands.

The initiative, he said, aligns fully with the Service’s modernization and transformation agenda.

“Across all our operations, we are deploying innovative, technology-driven solutions to simplify processes, enhance transparency, and boost revenue,” he said.

Adeniyi added that the Customs Verification Management System is another demonstration of the Service’s commitment to building a more efficient and trusted institution for Nigeria.
