Tinubu Swears In Prof. Amupitan as New INEC Chairman, Charges Him to Uphold Electoral Integrity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday officially swore in Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marking the formal commencement of his tenure as head of Nigeria’s electoral body.

The brief swearing-in ceremony was held at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, shortly before the expanded meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC).

While performing the ceremony, President Tinubu urged the new INEC Chairman to uphold the integrity of the nation’s electoral process, strengthen institutional capacity within the Commission, and ensure the conduct of credible, transparent, and technology-driven elections across the country.

Amupitan’s appointment followed his unanimous endorsement by the National Council of State, after President Tinubu submitted his name for consideration. The Senate later confirmed his nomination through a voice vote presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

A Professor of Law at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) since 2014, Amupitan hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. He is widely recognized for his expertise in company law, law of evidence, corporate governance, and privatisation law.

With his assumption of office, the new INEC boss immediately faces key electoral responsibilities, notably the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 2025 and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections set for February 2026.

Professor Amupitan succeeds former INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended earlier this year, and is expected to bring renewed focus on transparency, innovation, and institutional reforms in Nigeria’s electoral system.
