Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation of New Service Chiefs
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the newly appointed Service Chiefs as part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to reinvigorate Nigeria’s national security architecture.
In a letter read on the floor of the Senate by President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during Tuesday’s plenary, Tinubu urged lawmakers to give “expeditious consideration” to the nominations to enable the new military leaders assume their constitutional duties without delay.
The nominees are General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Waheedi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke, Chief of Air Staff; and Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence.
Akpabio thereafter referred the President’s request to the Committee of the Whole for screening and confirmation, scheduled to hold on Wednesday.

The development follows barely 48 hours after President Tinubu met with the newly appointed Service Chiefs behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja — his first official engagement with the nation’s military hierarchy since last Friday’s sweeping changes in the Armed Forces.
According to the Presidency, the shake-up is “in furtherance of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen the national security architecture and enhance operational effectiveness.”
President Tinubu, while appreciating the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other retired senior officers for their patriotic service and leadership, charged the new appointees to justify the confidence reposed in them by upholding professionalism, discipline, and unity within the Armed Forces.
With Senate confirmation expected this week, the new Service Chiefs are anticipated to bring renewed synergy, strategic focus, and inter-agency cooperation in tackling insurgency, banditry, and other emerging security threats across the country.
