Warrah Idris Takes Over Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Pledges Tougher Onslaught Against Bandits
The Nigerian Army has appointed Major General Warrah Idris as the new Theatre Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, marking a renewed phase in the military’s counter-banditry operations across the North-West.
General Idris officially assumed command on Monday at the operation’s headquarters in Gusau, Zamfara State, following his redeployment from the Defence Department of Transformation and Innovation, in line with the recent posting of senior officers by the Army High Command.
The new commander, who replaces Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Abdullahi, vowed to sustain the tempo of ongoing operations and pursue a more coordinated and intelligence-driven campaign against criminal elements terrorising the region.
“We will strengthen synergy among all components of the Joint Task Force, maintain discipline and focus, and work closely with communities and security stakeholders to restore peace and stability,” General Idris said in his maiden address to troops.

His predecessor, Air Vice Marshal Abdullahi, who has been posted to the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters as Chief of Policy and Plans (NAF), lauded the troops and civilian staff for their loyalty and professionalism during his tenure. He attributed the gains recorded under his watch to teamwork and operational discipline.
He urged troops to extend the same cooperation to his successor, describing the North-West as a “critical theatre” in Nigeria’s broader security operations.
The brief but symbolic handover ceremony featured the exchange of command documents, presentation of the command flag, and group photographs of senior officers and component heads.
Military observers say the appointment of General Idris — known for his operational efficiency and inter-agency coordination — is part of efforts to inject fresh momentum into the fight against banditry, kidnapping, and illegal mining in Zamfara and adjoining states.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA, established as a multi-service Joint Task Force, has been at the forefront of combating banditry and other violent crimes in the North-West, with ongoing offensives across Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto states.
