Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has strongly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “disgraced country” and his subsequent threat of military action over alleged killings of Christians. Senator Jibrin labeled the statement “offensive and undiplomatic,” demanding a full retraction and apology.
Speaking to an audience of All Progressives Congress (APC) youths in a viral video, Mr. Jibrin maintained that issuing military threats without following international law is unacceptable.
“For Trump to come and say we are going to attack you, Nigeria is a disgraced country, is quite unacceptable. We feel he should understand and retract that statement,” Mr. Jibrin said.
Warning Against Breach of International Law
The Deputy Senate President stressed that Trump’s words were inconsistent with the values America claims to uphold, insisting that no foreign leader has the right to bypass due diplomatic process to issue military threats.
“It’s against international law. Whatever you feel about our country, follow the legal route,” Jibrin stated. “Go to the United Nations, get a resolution there, and then anything can come later. To bypass that route is quite unacceptable. It’s un-American.”
Jibrin, addressing the cheering audience, maintained that Nigeria would not be cowed by Trump’s rhetoric, stating: “We are not scared of telling Trump the truth. If he were here, I would tell him he has gone against international law and that the route he’s taking is not the best one to take.”
He urged the U.S. to pursue diplomatic engagement rather than threats, emphasizing that mutual respect remains central to international relations.
