CNS Abbas Unveils Strategic Vision to Reposition Nigerian Navy

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi  Abbas, has unveiled a new strategic vision, mission, and command philosophy to reposition the Nigerian Navy for greater operational effectiveness, professionalism, and synergy with other security agencies in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.

In a statement signed by Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, Director of Naval Information, the Naval Chief outlined his vision as “to develop a modern, agile, and professional naval force dedicated to securing Nigeria’s maritime interests and advancing national security objectives in synergy with other security agencies.”

Vice Admiral Abbas emphasized that the new direction is anchored on building a Navy capable of responding swiftly and effectively to contemporary maritime challenges, including piracy, oil theft, illegal fishing, and transnational crimes in the Gulf of Guinea and other critical maritime domains.

He further stated that the mission of the Nigerian Navy under his leadership is “to deploy a highly motivated and professional naval force capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests and contributing effectively to joint operations in defence of national sovereignty and maintenance of internal stability.”

The Naval Chief noted that achieving this mission will require a sustained investment in training, technology, and personnel welfare, ensuring that naval officers and ratings remain well-equipped and motivated to serve with pride and commitment.

Vice Admiral Abbas also articulated his Command Philosophy as “to lead with unwavering integrity and purposeful resolve; enforcing discipline, merit, and accountability as the bedrock of professionalism, while promoting personnel welfare and inspiring a mission-ready force dedicated to excellence and service to the nation.”

The Nigerian Navy, he stressed, will continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism while fostering strong inter-agency collaboration to enhance national security.

He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening internal discipline, enhancing fleet readiness, and improving the Navy’s capacity for maritime domain awareness through modern technology and intelligence-driven operations.

Commodore Adams-Aliu described the policy statement as the foundation for a renewed era of efficiency and purpose-driven leadership within the Nigerian Navy, adding that it aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to strengthen national defence institutions through self-reliance, innovation, and operational excellence.

The statement urged officers, ratings, and civilian staff to key into the CNS’s vision and uphold the core values of integrity, professionalism, and patriotism as the Navy works toward securing Nigeria’s vast maritime domain and contributing to regional peace and stability.
