Terrorists Kill Female Muslim Influencer Over Pro-Military Post in Mali
A female Muslim social media influencer with a large following was publicly abducted and executed by terrorists in Mali after repeatedly posting videos that promotethe Malian military.
Mariam Cisse, a TikToker in her 20s with more than 95,000 followers, was killed by an armed group reportedly affiliated with the al-Qaeda-allied insurgent group JNIM (Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin).
The execution highlights the extreme dangers faced by citizens who voice support for the military in Mali’s conflict zones.
Cisse, a practicing Muslim was livestreaming at a local market in her hometown of Tonka in northern Timbuktu when members of the armed group abducted her. Her captors accused her of spying for the Malian army and shot her dead the following day.
In several of her TikTok videos, Cisse appeared in a military uniform and used pro-military slogans such as “Vive Mali” (Long Live Mali).

The tragic incident comes amid a rapid deterioration of the security situation in Mali and other parts of the Sahel, where terrorist groups have imposed blockades, disrupted essential supplies, and worsened humanitarian conditions for civilian populations.
African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf condemned the “deliberate attacks against innocent civilians” that have caused “unacceptable loss of lives and heightened instability.” He expressed concern over the security deterioration and affirmed that the African Union stands ready “to support Mali as well as all Sahel countries during this particularly challenging period.”
Mali has faced political and security turmoil since 2012, compounded by repeated attacks from armed groups and clashes with separatist forces in the north. JNIM and the Macina Liberation Front (FLM) are designated by the Malian government as terrorist organizations.
In recent weeks, the country has also faced a fuel crisis as armed groups block vital supply routes to the capital, Bamako.
