Expect Tougher Days Ahead – Marwa Warns Drug Cartels After Reappointment
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), has warned drug barons, traffickers and criminal cartels to abandon their illicit activities or brace for unprecedented heat as he commences his second five-year tenure.
Marwa, who was reappointed on Friday, 14 November 2025, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was received with jubilation by management and staff of the Agency at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja.
Addressing the excited personnel, he expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for recognising the Agency’s ongoing efforts in combating drug abuse and trafficking, while also thanking God for the opportunity to continue the national assignment.
He praised the dedication of NDLEA officers who, according to him, work tirelessly round the clock despite the risks involved. Marwa also acknowledged the support of key government officials, including the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and the Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun, as well as the Agency’s local and international partners.

Issuing a stern message to drug cartels, Marwa said his new tenure would be far more difficult for those involved in the illicit trade. He vowed that the Agency would tighten its grip to ensure that no narcotics enter, exit or circulate within the country.
He urged those still engaged in the drug business to take advantage of the NDLEA’s Alternative Development Programme, which encourages cannabis growers and other traffickers to switch to legal means of livelihood. He warned that those who refuse would face arrest, seizure of their drugs, confiscation of their assets and potentially return from jail to find nothing left.
Marwa reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to drug demand reduction, announcing renewed focus on prevention, sensitisation, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation. He revealed that NDLEA currently runs 30 rehabilitation centres and that seven more would be built under the 2025 budget to ensure that every state has its own facility. He also applauded the Minister of Health and the Minister of Education, noting the latter’s approval of mandatory drug testing for students seeking admission into tertiary institutions as part of efforts to curb addiction early.
He offered prayers for President Tinubu, the Agency’s supporters and all NDLEA personnel as they continue the national fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
