Customs Hands Over 86kg of Illicit Drugs to NDLEA in Owerri
The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone C of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a drug trafficking attempt involving 151 wraps of Cannabis Sativa weighing 77.5 kilogrammes and 15 wraps of Canadian Loud weighing 8.6 kilogrammes.
The illicit drugs, concealed in a manner designed to evade security checks, were seized during routine patrol operations by Customs officers acting on credible intelligence. The items were formally handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday, November 14, 2025, at the Unit’s headquarters in Owerri.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Comptroller of FOU Zone C, Comptroller Bishir Balogun, said the arrest was a testament to the vigilance, commitment and operational efficiency of his officers.
“The contraband was carefully concealed and transported in a manner intended to evade detection, but our officers, acting on intelligence and in line with our operational mandate, were able to intercept and secure it,” he said.

Balogun restated the commitment of the Service, under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, to its core mandates of revenue generation, suppression of smuggling and facilitation of legitimate trade. He noted that intercepting harmful substances remained a critical component of national security, as drugs posed significant risks to communities.
He added that the handover to NDLEA demonstrated the strong inter-agency collaboration encouraged by the Federal Government. “The NDLEA remains the competent authority in handling drug-related matters, and we are proud to work in synergy with them to ensure that justice is served and these harmful substances are removed from circulation,” Balogun stated.
The seized 77.5kg of Cannabis Sativa and 8.6kg of Canadian Loud were officially transferred to NDLEA officials for further investigation and necessary action.
Comptroller Balogun commended his officers for their professionalism and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information to assist security agencies in tackling drug trafficking and other forms of illicit trade.
