COAS Shaibu Visits Borno, Charges Troops to Sustain Operation Against Terrorists

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of Operation Hadin Kai to maintain heightened vigilance and sustain an aggressive operational posture in the ongoing counterterrorism campaign across the North-East.

General Shaibu gave the directive on Tuesday during an operational assessment visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai (JTF NE OPHK) in Maiduguri. The visit, according to military authorities, was designed to evaluate the security situation, review operational effectiveness, and strengthen strategic coordination among security stakeholders working to contain lingering threats in the region.

Addressing troops, the Army chief commended their courage and resilience in confronting Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents, urging them to avoid complacency and remain alert to emerging threats.

He stressed the need for continuous operational aggressiveness to deny terrorists the freedom of movement or action within the theatre of operations. “Stay vigilant, remain resolute, and maintain maximum situational awareness,” he told the personnel, praising their contribution to recent gains recorded under Operation Hadin Kai.

Gen. Shaibu also met with officers of the Theatre Command, where he emphasized close supervision, improved coordination, enhanced intelligence gathering, and a more robust operational posture to consolidate successes achieved so far.

Earlier, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, briefed the COAS on recent achievements, ongoing operations, and challenges confronting troops in the field.

In a related development, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, paid a courtesy visit to the Army chief during his tour. Governor Zulum congratulated Lt. Gen. Shaibu on his appointment as the 25th Chief of Army Staff, describing the elevation as well deserved given his deep operational experience in the theatre.

He commended the COAS for his past contributions to reducing insurgency in the state and expressed confidence that he would build on existing efforts to decimate remaining insurgent elements and restore lasting peace to the region. The Governor reaffirmed the commitment of the government and people of Borno State to supporting the Nigerian military and other security stakeholders in their stabilisation efforts.

While acknowledging the successes recorded, Zulum urged troops not to be discouraged by recent isolated attacks but to remain focused and determined.

Responding, General Shaibu thanked the Governor for the visit and lauded the continued cooperation between the state government and the military. He reiterated the Nigerian Army’s resolve to intensify operations aimed at restoring enduring peace and normalcy across Borno and the wider North-East.

The COAS was accompanied on the visit by several Principal Staff Officers from the Army Headquarters.
