Lagos Police Halt Planned Egungun Festival, Arrest 12 Promoters

The Lagos State Police Command has halted plans for an unapproved Egungun festival in Oregun and arrested twelve suspects linked to handbills and social media posts that purportedly restricted the movement and rights of residents.

The information was disclosed in a statement issued by SP Abimbola Adebisi, Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.

The controversial publication, credited to a group identified as Oje Parapo of Oregun, had warned the public against free movement and expression ahead of an Egungun festival previously scheduled for 27th and 28th November 2025. The police said the messages generated fear and tension among residents.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, immediately ordered the suspension of the event, describing it as a potential threat to public peace, safety, and order. He stressed that no group had the authority to impose restrictions on residents or infringe on their fundamental human rights.

“The Command will not tolerate lawlessness in any part of the State,” the statement read, warning individuals and groups planning unauthorized gatherings to desist or face the full weight of the law.

The police said a threat assessment revealed that the publications had already created widespread apprehension in the Oregun community, prompting the decision to stop the festival entirely. CP Jimoh stated that no cultural event capable of heightening tension or disrupting public order would be permitted under any circumstances.

In a related development, the Command said it took swift action on November 23, 2025, in Mafoluku, Oshodi, after similar inciting materials were circulated. Twelve suspects were arrested during the operation and are currently under investigation, with prosecution to follow.

The CP reaffirmed that the Egungun festival by the Oje Parapo group must not hold, citing security concerns and the fear already instilled in residents. He warned that any attempt to undermine the peace and stability of Lagos State would be met with decisive legal action.

Residents were urged to go about their lawful activities without fear and to promptly report suspicious movements to the police through the Command’s emergency lines.
