Lagos Police Suspend Egungun Festival Over Public Safety Concerns
The Lagos State Police Command has ordered the suspension of the Egungun festival originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Oregun, citing concerns over public safety and order.
In a statement on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the arrest of suspects linked to the circulation of posters and social media posts warning residents against free movement during the festival.
The suspects, allegedly acting under the name “Oje Parapo of Oregun,” were apprehended after distributing handbills that the police said restricted residents’ freedom of movement and could incite fear.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the immediate suspension of the festival scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025,” the statement said.

CP Jimoh warned that the command would not tolerate any activity capable of breaching public peace, threatening safety, or disrupting law and order.
The police emphasized that no cultural event or gathering that could heighten tensions or endanger lives would be permitted in the state. In a related incident on November 23 at Mafoluku, Oshodi, officers arrested 12 individuals over a similar attempt to incite disorder through provocative publications. All suspects are currently under investigation.
CP Jimoh also directed the Oje Parapo group to desist from any attempt to hold the festival, stating that security for such an event could not be guaranteed. He condemned the fear generated among residents and warned that anyone undermining public peace would face the full weight of the law.
The command reassured Lagos residents of continued protection of life and property and encouraged them to go about their lawful activities without fear.
