Troops Arrest 2 Herders for Trespassing, Destroying Farmlands in Makurdi
In a proactive measure to protect farmers and ensure food security during the harvest period, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) have arrested two herders for trespassing and destroying crops on community farmland in Makurdi, Benue State.
The incident occurred on 20 November 2025, when OPWS troops deployed at Zongo Akiki conducted a routine patrol of farmlands. The troops intercepted the herders after they reportedly drove their cattle into cultivated fields belonging to local residents, causing crop damage. Their prompt intervention prevented further destruction and potential clashes between the herders and farmers.

Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands in disputes or misunderstandings. He emphasized that retaliatory actions only escalate tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.
“Law-abiding conduct by all, including herders, is essential to maintaining peace and order,” he said, reaffirming the operation’s commitment to safeguarding farmlands and creating a conducive environment for legitimate agricultural and business activities.
The arrest forms part of ongoing security efforts by Operation WHIRL STROKE to protect farmers and promote peaceful rural livelihoods during critical farming seasons.
