NAF Dazzles at Nigeria’s First International Airshow, Showcases Rising Airpower Capability

Nigeria entered a new phase in its aviation history on Tuesday as the Federal Ministry of Aviation inaugurated the maiden Nigeria International Airshow at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The event, held on 2 December 2025, attracted global aerospace manufacturers, senior defence officials, industry experts, and aviation enthusiasts, marking the country’s bold step into the international airshow circuit.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) was one of the major highlights of the opening day, thrilling spectators with precision flypasts and static aircraft displays. Piloted by top-tier NAF aircrews, the demonstrations drew wide international admiration and underscored Nigeria’s growing influence in military aviation.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Chief of Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Yaro Abdullahi, described Nigeria as naturally positioned to become a strategic aviation hub. He noted that the country’s youthful population, expanding domestic air transport market, and improving technological base offer significant opportunities for rapid sectoral growth.

AVM Abdullahi, however, emphasised the importance of sustained investment in airport modernisation, robust Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, digital aviation systems, and a viable national carrier. According to him, these elements are critical to unlocking Nigeria’s full aviation potential and ensuring long-term industry transformation.

The NAF’s most symbolic moment came during the ceremonial flypast, when an Augusta 109 Light Utility Helicopter soared across the Abuja skyline carrying the National Flag and the emblem of the Nigeria International Airshow. The display—combining agility, patriotism, and airpower precision—set an electrifying tone for the event.

With the theme “Redefining the Aviation Industry Through Investment and Global Engagement,” the inaugural airshow is projected to reshape global perceptions of Nigeria’s aviation landscape. The NAF’s commanding presence further boosted confidence in the nation’s aerospace capabilities while raising expectations for subsequent demonstrations as the event continues.
