NEC Okays N100bn to Upgrade Security Training Institutions

The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N100 billion for the rehabilitation and upgrade of training institutions belonging to the Nigeria Police and other security agencies across the country.

The approval was granted during NEC’s 154th meeting held virtually on Wednesday. The Council also endorsed N2.6 billion for consultancy services to support the implementation of the project. Both approvals, however, remain subject to final ratification by President Bola Tinubu.

The decision followed the recommendations of the NEC ad-hoc committee set up earlier in the year to assess the condition of security training facilities nationwide.

Presenting the committee’s report, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who chairs the ad-hoc committee, said the assessment revealed that most of the institutions were in deplorable condition, requiring urgent intervention to restore their capacity for effective manpower development.

He stressed that the state of the facilities posed a setback to the broader national security reform efforts of the Federal Government.

NEC Chairman and Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening security architecture through improved training and operational standards. He urged governors to ensure that economic and security reforms being pursued at both state and federal levels translate into measurable improvements in the lives of Nigerians.

According to him, governance must now shift from “policy declarations to tangible outcomes felt in markets, schools, clinics and farms.”

“Our task is not to admire problems, but to solve them. Not to explain challenges, but to overcome them. And not to hope for progress, but to engineer it,” Shettima said.

He maintained that the proposed overhaul of security training institutions is a critical step toward equipping personnel with modern skills and tools to confront the evolving security threats facing Nigeria.
