COAS Reaffirms Nigeria’s Regional Security Role as Musa Lauds Troops for Foiling Benin Coup Attempt

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the stability and security of the West African sub-region, emphasising stronger cross-border cooperation, shared responsibility and unwavering support for democratic governance.

Speaking at the decoration ceremony of newly promoted senior officers at the Nigerian Army Command Officers’ Mess, Abuja, Shaibu said Nigeria’s security remained closely tied to that of its neighbours. He noted that the Nigerian Army would continue to back regional initiatives that promote secure borders and enhance collective defence structures.

“Our role in the security of the West African region is vital,” the COAS stated. “We must continue to support all efforts to secure our shared borders and uphold democratic governance, which is key to the stability of every nation in the region.”

He described the elevation of the officers as a testament to the Army’s confidence in their ability to provide strengthened strategic leadership and operational capacity at a time of evolving security demands.

“We expect you to bring renewed energy, foresight and commitment to your new responsibilities. The challenges before us demand professionalism, collaboration and a clear sense of purpose,” he added.

In his remarks, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), commended the Armed Forces for their swift and coordinated response during the recent attempted coup in Benin Republic. He said the timely intervention was central to averting the destabilisation of a neighbouring country.

“Our prompt response made sure the coup failed, and this is exactly what the Armed Forces should always do,” the minister said. “We must be ready 24/7 to respond to any threat—whether against Nigeria or any of our regional allies.”

Musa noted that the newly promoted officers now occupy critical command positions where their decisions will significantly influence national security and regional peace-building efforts. He urged them to lead with integrity, prioritise joint operations and strengthen inter-service cooperation.

The ceremony was attended by senior military commanders, defence officials, families of the promoted officers and other invited guests.
