Air Power Key to Nigeria’s Security Success, Says Defence Minister
The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) OFR, has reiterated that air power remains pivotal to Nigeria’s operational successes, describing it as “central to the successes recorded across multiple theatres.”
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the investiture ceremony for newly promoted Air Commodores and Air Vice Marshals at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters in Abuja on 11 December 2025, General Musa said the promotions not only recognise personal achievement but also reflect the nation’s confidence in the officers’ strategic leadership during a defining moment for national security.
“The expectations placed on you are high because your elevated position requires clear vision, steady judgement, and an enduring sense of purpose,” he said, urging the officers to embrace their new roles with dedication and humility.
The Defence Minister emphasized that promotion to the rank of Air Vice Marshal demands a broader outlook, heightened discipline, and a deeper commitment to excellence. He described the newly elevated officers as custodians of the traditions and values of the Nigerian Air Force, noting that their leadership decisions would influence operational effectiveness and inspire future generations of military leaders.

General Musa also highlighted the decisive role of air power in precision engagements, tactical mobility, and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, which have significantly strengthened joint operations. He called for deeper inter-Service cooperation, noting that air operations achieve their full potential only when integrated seamlessly with the Nigerian Army, Navy, and other national security agencies.
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, congratulated the officers, stressing that rank is earned through diligence, competence, and character. He reminded the officers of the complex security challenges facing the nation, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and emerging cyber threats, and urged them to demonstrate exemplary leadership in translating strategic directives into actionable results.
Both the Minister and CAS paid tribute to fallen heroes and personnel who bear the scars of service, acknowledging their sacrifices as a solemn reminder of the weight of responsibility shouldered by senior leaders. General Musa also expressed appreciation to the families of the promoted officers for their patience and unwavering support.
Closing the ceremony, the Defence Minister commended the CAS for his leadership in advancing the professional excellence of the Service and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his continuous support to the Armed Forces. He urged the officers to lead with humility, clarity of purpose, and total commitment to national security as they assume their enhanced responsibilities.
The ceremony concluded with well-wishes for the officers as they embark on the next phase of their service to the nation.
